Hockey ace hopes for GB place to end year

NICOLA WHITE is anxiously waiting to hear whether she has been selected to play for Great Britain in two end-of-year events in Argentina.

The 27-year-old former Saddleworth Hockey Club member hopes to be heading to South America at the end of the month for a test series against Argentina in Tucuman followed immediately by the World League final at Rosario.

Though Nicola is expected to feature, she is not taking anything for granted after this time last year not being selected for the England team that headed to Argentina to compete in the Champions Trophy.Investec London Cup 2012

But after helping Great Britain win the World League semi final and England the European Hockey Championships earlier this year, Nicola is hoping that will warrant her inclusion.

She said: “I am not sure how our coach Danny Kerry will approach the trip to Argentina which could be one of two ways.

“It will be the last time the coach will have the chance to see other squad players in a tournament before next summer’s Olympic Games.

“But we are unbeaten in competitive matches in 2015 and it has been such a good year that it would be great to finish it on another higher by having a go at winning it, and not on a downer.”

The World League final features the top eight countries and in their group they have to play hosts Argentina, Olympic champions Australia and China.

Nicola has another accolade after England were last week recipients of the team prize at The Sunday Times/Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year Awards after winning the European championships when they defeated world champions Holland in a final decided by a dramatic penalty shootout.

“When I saw that football and rugby team and rowing were also on the short-list, I thought we had no chance so to win was fantastic,” she explained.
