MORE THAN 40 businesses and services in Uppermill came together to learn more about how they can help to create a dementia friendly high street.

Helen Morris, Services Manager in the area for Alzheimer’s Society, hosted the welcome session at the Civic Hall to provide companies with information and resources.
The aim of the project, which is Big Lottery Funded, is to explain the condition to businesses so they can better understand and help customers living with dementia.
Representatives of the businesses and services joined volunteers and the team to demonstrate their support and find out more about playing their part.
Volunteers were presented with a Dementia Friendly Communities Mug as a thank you for their efforts so far to involve such a diverse group of important service providers in the community.
Helen, who is a Dementia Friends Champion, said: “We are learning all the time and the members gave us some great ideas about how we can offer practical support.
“One puzzle is how we can attract staff to an hour-long Dementia Friends session. People may think it is really dull but the feedback we get is the opposite.
“We will be asking smaller groups of members if they would like to join together to have the session.”
Membership of ‘Dementia Friendly Uppermill’ now includes shops, restaurants and cafes, estate agents, pubs, and many more across the area.
Volunteers are planning new visits in the New Year but if your business would like a visit or more information please contact the team on 0161 962 4788 or email DFCGM@alzheimers.org.uk
