IMPROVED lighting is set to illuminate Greenfield park after concerns were raised by local residents and business owners.
As reported in last month’s Independent, Tony Simpson, landlord of the King William IV pub next to the park, highlighted the issue at the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership meet-ing in December.
As well as the risk of people falling in the dark, he said the park often attracts large groups of young people and PC Lee Cullen confirmed it is a hot-spot for anti-social behaviour.
Councillors Graham Sheldon and Jamie Curley joined Oldham Council officers in conducting a site visit to look at the lights and possibilities of improvements.
They decided to improve the existing lighting column by adding more lights and changing them to brighter LEDs rather than adding more lights around the park.
Cllr Sheldon said: “This is a low-cost solution that will have an impact in the first instance.
“We could put lots of lights all around the park but that would attract more people there and could also be a nuisance for the residents nearby.
“The old garage is being developed soon so hopefully if there’s more people looking over that will stop people getting into mischief there.”
They added Greenfield Cricket Club is currently undergoing some redevelopment work and as part of this is reviewing its CCTV and lighting.
