Inquest hears car involved in fatal Diggle crash was seen ‘travelling at speed’

A WOMAN died when the car she was travelling in was seen ‘driving at speed’ before colliding with a bungalow in Diggle, the opening of an inquest has heard.

Joceline Cecil Franklin was in the front passenger seat of a Fiat 500 when the incident occurred at the junction of Dorset Avenue and Huddersfield Road on December 8.

The vehicle travelled cross the main road and down a passageway, next to the village’s Post Office, before making contact with the building.

And the opening of an inquest into the 81-year-old widow’s death heard how the car she in was seen on CCTV ‘driving at speed.’

The car was seen travelling at speed towards the bungalow, the inquest hears

Police coroner’s officer Tracy Bunn, who made the statement, told the hearing at Rochdale Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, December 23 the car was heading in a southeastern direction down Dorset Avenue.

When the vehicle, which was being driven by a 75-year-old, approached the junction with Huddersfield Road, it failed to stop before making contact with the home’s ground floor bedroom, causing the wall to collapse.

The hearing heard emergency services attended and Ms Franklin – who was born in Hyde but later moved to Diggle – was removed from the car. CPR was attempted but failed.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and identified via the photographs on her driving licence and bus pass by a police officer.

The hearing was told there was no update on the unidentified driver, who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was described as being in critical condition.

An investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is ongoing.

The medical cause of Ms Franklin’s death was recorded as multiple blunt force injuries and Joanne Kearsey, senior coroner for Manchester North, adjourned the inquest until March 6.
