Morris Men close season for 50th year with Lordsmere Longsword dance

Saddleworth Morris Men are seeing out the year in style as they step out for their annual Lordsmere Longsword dance.

The side will pull on their clogs on Saturday, December 27 for the popular event which closes their 2025 season.

This year will be extra special as the team celebrates 50 years since the first time they performed the iconic dance.

The event sees members of the side remove their famous waistcoats, sashes and the bells from their clogs to carry out the dance in traditional dress.

The dance, from the North East of England, has been adopted as part of the repertoire of Saddleworth Morris Men for many years and its climax sees the swords interlocked to form the ‘lock’ which is held aloft after performing a series of intertwining figures at a fast pace.

All are welcome to watch the side perform across the Saddleworth villages:

  • 1pm – The Wellington, Greenfield
  • 2pm – The Swan, Delph
  • 3pm – The Swan, Dobcross
  • 4pm – Diggle Hotel, Diggle
  • 5pm – Conservative Club, Uppermill
  • 6pm – Cross Keys Inn, Uppermill
