Jo and co busting to get to Benidorm for charity fundraiser

FOUR friends have booked a girls’ trip with a difference to Spain next year.

Joanne Magilton, Louise Kershaw, Tracey Rontree and Lisa Watson are teaming up to take part in the annual Benidorm or Bust car rally. And the ‘fab four’ have already overcome one hurdle-acquiring a vehicle they hope will take them nearly 1,200 miles.

Just days after an appeal in our sister paper, the Mossley Correspondent, Joanne and her pals were contacted by Oldham District Freemasons with an offer of help.

“It is unbelievable,” beamed Joanne of the Freemasons’ donation.

“It is a red Skoda Octavia estate with 118,000 miles on the clock and one lady owner.

“It came via a contact Tracey has through doing amateur dramatics. We are gobsmacked and overwhelmed it has happened so quickly.”

The quartet are taking part in the annual event to raise £10,000 for Willow Wood Hospice and Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

They launched their charity appeal alongside Grasscroft based ‘Early Doors’ actor, John Henshaw, at The Wellington, Greenfield.

“The hospices and the work they do are very close to our hearts. Besides, doing the rally is something different; it’s a talking point as well.

“We have set a target of £10,000 to be divided between both charities but I am confident we can do more if we put our minds to it.”

Last year, a fundraiser at the Greenfield hostelry raised £7,500 for the two hospices and Prevent Breast Cancer.

“The idea is we get everything we need for free so we can keep costs and expenses to an absolute minimum,” said Joanne.

“Because we are an all-female team we are thinking of approaching Sheila’s Wheels for insurance and hopefully someone can provide us with roadside assistance membership.

“We will also be looking at getting the car sponsored by local companies.”

The four, calling themselves Bob ’82, have until May next year to put their plans in place.

“We leave Greenfield on the 18th and then set off from Dover with around 200 other cars on the 19th.

“It’s not a race as such but everyone has to be in Benidorm for Saturday, May 23. Hopefully, we will be there on time because we have friends and families coming out to meet us.”
