Kind-hearted group sleep out for World Homeless Day

A KIND-HEARTED team from a Mossley charity completed an overnight sleep out to highlight the plight of homeless people on World Homeless Day 2015.

Staff, volunteers and companions (formerly homeless people) of Emmaus Mossley spent the night living and sleeping on the street at Ashton Market on October 10.

The site included settees and beds to highlight the ‘hidden homelessness’ reality that many people face.

Michael O’Connor, a companion at Emmaus Mossley, said: “Before becoming homeless I worked in security and construction for many years.

“When the work dried up and my benefits stopped I found myself living on the streets for six years.

“Since joining Emmaus I feel motivated, have a purpose every day and really value being part of the community.”

Emmaus Mossley supports 24 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and work in a community setting.

The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated and upcycled furniture, household goods and vintage wares.

Hazel Hodkinson, Shop Manager of Emmaus Mossley, said: “We wanted to sleep out for World Homeless Day 2015 to raise awareness about people who find themselves homeless.

“Homelessness is on the rise so there is a great need to support those people in our society who find themselves in that position.”

Emmaus Mossley are collecting donations of items to be distributed this winter for people who are homeless and living on the streets. These include backpacks, blankets, sleeping bags, (new) socks and underwear, tooth brushes and thermos flasks.

If you would like to get involved or donate an item visit Emmaus Mossley at Longlands Mill, Queen Street, Mossley, on Monday to Saturday.
