A TOP nursery in Diggle has welcomed a new arrival with a difference as they have bought their own defibrillator.

Diggle Day Nursery, which opened on Huddersfield Road in February 2013, purchased the life-saving equipment three months ago for use by the nursery and the general public.
Nursery owner Dawn Naughton explained she decided to buy the automated machine, which can be used on both adults and children, as health and safety is one of their top priorities.
She said: “There was an incident just outside the nursery not long ago when a little boy was hit by a car and they came here for help. That spurred us on to think about what we can offer.
“First aid is really important for us and every staff member is fully trained. Parents have been really pleased with the idea.
“We’re paying for the defibrillator in instalments and so it doesn’t work out that expensive overall. I don’t know why more businesses don’t do it.”
The defibrillator, which is checked weekly, can save lives by giving the heart an electric shock in some cases of cardiac arrest.
Dawn also purchased a defibrillator for her second nursery in Briercliffe in Lancashire, which she has been running for 12 years with her husband.
Stacey Hesford, Nursery Manager, added: “The defibrillator is portable so we can take it with us if we want on trips.
“Also, we’re starting a ‘Crawlers and Cruisers’ group in June and will have a lot of new families coming in so now we know we’ve got that extra equipment in place should anyone need it.”
