A SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS treat was in store for young readers at the launch of the new Saddleworth Children’s Book Group.
A ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ themed party at Sandy Lane Community Church in Dobcross was the group’s first event as they aim to inspire youngsters to read more.
Children took part in a chocolate egg and spoon race, designed sweets and chocolates, made Wonka-style top hats and tested their knowledge in a quiz.
They also heard stories from the much-loved book, read by Mr Willy Wonka.
The new group, which has been set up by four local mums, is aimed at children aged four to 11 and will hold monthly events such as story-telling, author and illustrator visits, and book swaps.
It is linked to the Federation of Children’s Book Groups (FCBG), a national registered charity established in the 1960s.
Saddleworth Children’s Book Group chair Kate Breitholtz said: “We hope families will come and share the fun of reading great books, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“Our launch party was just the start of a whole series of events aimed at helping children to enjoy all sorts of books, fiction and non-fiction.”
Their next event on Saturday, June 7 from 2.30pm-4pm will see storyteller Susannah Meese sharing her Creepy Tales and children can also create a Creepy House full of ghosts and gore.
The stories are aimed at children aged 6-11 years old but younger members are welcome to join in. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Annual membership of the Saddleworth Children’s Book Group is £8 for families with one child or £10 for families with two or more children.
