RE-OPEN: The Satellite Centre in Greenfield

The Satellite Centre on Wellington Road in Greenfield closed in 2015 after youth provision there was ended as part of £35million savings by Oldham Council.

Now, the Saddleworth Sports, Youth and Community Association (SSYCA) – a new board of trustees – has signed a one-year lease to operate the centre and they re-opened in September.

And already local groups and organisations are flooding in, from YOLO youth group, Jelly Tots, Pilates, cookery classes, PASS INC, sports clubs and Funky Fitness and Fun.

There is also a weekly coffee morning each Monday from 10.30am to 12noon, with all welcome.

Mike Rooke, Secretary of SSYCA, said he is deighted with the response from the community as he showed a jam-packed timetable to the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership at their December meeting.

“It just shows the brilliant take-up,” he said. “The footfall coming to the centre has really been impressive and it is very exciting.

“We’ve already got a good mix of all sorts of groups from youth to elderly to sports and we want to keep building on that now.”
