Local historian gives WW1 talk to mark 100th anniversary

A LOCAL historian will mark the 100th anniversary since the outbreak of the First World War with an intriguing talk at Oldham Local Studies and Archives.

John Fidler will discuss ‘The Gallantry and the Grieving. Oldham: August to December 1914’ on Monday, August 4 at 7pm.

He will examine lesser known aspects of the First World War in Oldham as he seeks to bring to life those extraordinary five months at the beginning of the war.

What was it like for those left behind as men joined their regiments, the Territorials, or volunteered for the services?

How did women and children cope without the income from their husbands? What was the reaction when the first casualties began to appear?

And as the reality of the war began to be revealed did people really believe it would be all over by Christmas?

These are just some the questions John Fidler will address as Oldham Local Studies and Archives begins a series of events over the next four years to explore the experiences of Oldhamers’ during the First World War.

The talk takes place on Monday, August 4 at 7pm at Oldham Local Studies and Archives, 84 Union Street, Oldham, OL1 1DN. Tel: 0161 770 4654. Email archives@oldham.gov.uk
