SADDLEWORTH’S Luncheon Club is appealing for volunteers to help them continue serving up a tasty treat for elderly people each week.
Many organisations rely on volunteers to help them run successfully and The Luncheon Club is a prime example.
The club has been enjoyed by local residents for many years but is now in danger of closure if more help cannot be found.
They meet every Wednesday at the Civic Hall in Uppermill at around 11.45am for a lunch at 12.15pm. The two-course lunch is prepared and served to about 30 elderly members, and volunteers can also enjoy the food.
Volunteers are asked to give just four hours of their time (from around 9.30am-1.30pm) one Wednesday a month. It’s easy to swap a duty to fit holidays, appointments and family commitments.
Inevitably volunteers are forced to retire for personal reasons which leaves gaps in the workforce and the Club is keen to fill these so these valuable lunches can continue.
What can you do to help? If cooking appeals, then you can lead a team choosing your own menu or leave it to someone else to devise the menu for you. And all cooks need assistants to help with the meal preparation.
Or help is also needed in the dining room setting tables, meeting and greeting elderly guests, serving the meal and tidying up at the end of the event.
Drivers play an important role on Wednesday mornings when they offer transport to elderly members who cannot get to the Civic Hall by other means.
Volunteers range in age from 54 to 84 but any age is welcome. Several drivers are men but that shouldn’t discourage any man from getting involved in the kitchen or the dining room.
