A POPULAR youth mentoring scheme in Oldham is seeking new recruits as their programme goes from strength to strength.

Mahdlo’s Mentoring Programme was launched at the Egerton Street youth zone last May and sees volunteer mentors from all walks of life matched with young people.
Currently, 43 mentors offer support, guidance and assistance to the young people aged -21 (or 25 if they have additional needs) through one-to-one sessions.
Callum Gordon, 14, and mentor Karen Flowers were matched in April and the pair meet on a weekly basis as Karen supports and motivates Callum to overcome challenges.
Already Callum has a new-found confidence and has tried a number of new activities, including a ‘Wheels For All’ cycling session aimed at people with a disability, which Callum said was one of the best experiences of his life.
When asked what Mentoring means to him, Callum said: “Enjoying new things. It makes me feel good and smile. I can talk to Karen about anything.”
Karen added: “Being a mentor means having the opportunity to meet and support a young person with their life journey and situations.”
And now, with lots of young people looking to benefit from the programme, Mahdlo are seeking to recruit and train more volunteer mentors.
They are looking for people who are able to give a couple of hours a week to make a huge difference to a young person’s life.
The next recruitment days are October, Saturday 24 and Saturday 31 from 12.30-5.30pm.
