MYRA Shiel was adamant she did not want a big party to celebrate her milestone 90th birthday on January 27 – but that was exactly the surprise she got!
The keen gardener, who lives in Greenfield, suffered two serious falls last year and told her four children she didn’t feel up to a big celebration.
However, she did agree to attend the Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party, put on by Saddleworth Round Table at the White Hart in Lydgate, which fell on her birthday.
But little did she know of the special treat awaiting her, organised by family friend and Round Table member Dave MacDougall.
Myra explained: “My children kept asking me what I wanted to do for my 90th but I didn’t feel up to it after my two falls – and I didn’t think my voice would last a night!
“But I ended get up getting a wonderful party with hundreds of guests!
“Dave contacted my daughter Julie and invited us all to the party but didn’t say what else he had planned. Everyone sang happy birthday to me and they gave me balloons and a cake.
“Dave and his team really do a fantastic job with this party year after year. I used to babysit him when he was little so we go back a long way and this means a lot to me.”
Myra was showered with cards, gifts and presents by family and friends to celebrate her birthday, including witty poems written by her son Damian.
“My children – Christine, Julie, Mark and Damian – have been very good with me since my falls,” said Myra who puts her good age down to lots of water and vegetables.
“I’ve spent a lot of time with them and at our caravan and there’s still life in me yet!”
