TWENTY-SIX friends of a golfing legend teed off to celebrate the life of a man they dubbed ‘Mister Sunshine’.
The golfers turned out to play a round at Saddleworth Golf Club five years to the day that John Beverley from Grasscroft died.
Mr Beverley, 67, who was a well respected businessman in the community, died at Celtic Manor, Newport, while watching Europe beat America for the Ryder Cup.
He was an integral part of the ‘Tuesday Golf Society’ which met at Saddleworth Golf Club on a regular weekly basis and his widow, Dorothy, put up a trophy in his memory.
The trophy was won by Alan Bottomley, from Manchester Golf Club on a card play-off, with Alan Ramsden, of Saddleworth, second.
Gordon Beverley, John’s eldest son, said: “It was great to see the Tuesday Club again and we had a super day.
“My father was nicknamed ‘Captain Sunshine’ because, despite forecasts to the contrary, whenever he played golf the sun always shone.
“On the memorial golf day, most of the games were played in the autumn sunshine.
“However, I was one of the last to come into the clubhouse and I had a couple of holes where I got drenched.
“Maybe dad was trying to tell me something?” he quipped.
Dorothy added: “John’s motto was ‘seize the day’ and his golfing buddies did just that. It was a wonderful turnout.”
