UPPERMILL IS to play host to a unique new ‘living museum’ later this month.
The Pennine 1940’s Military Weekend is the newest military vehicle and re-enactment show to visit the area with a series of exciting events.
One of the dedicated organisers promised: “There will be no candy floss parades or a Hollywood-style massive sell – the event is entirely free.
“It will be two days of history mixed with fun and will give visitors and military enthusiasts a chance to be part of a very important series of events.”
The military weekend will be staged on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday 27 and focus on St Chads Church, on Church Lane, Uppermill.
The venues will include the Church Inn and nearby Cross Keys and cater for First and Second World War enthusiasts and post war military re-enactors.
Locals and visitors are invited to join in a weekend of live music plus dancing with Katz Korner with top swing DJ “Kat in da Hat” playing 40’s favourites.
Good food and real ale – including a special 40’s brew – will be served all day and entertainment at both pubs is under cover.
Organisers say Swastika armbands and flags are not permitted along with all SS markings/runes and wearing of black allgemeine uniforms.
They added: “We want this to be a responsible, family event that will help give a real insight what life and times were like during the 1940’s.
“But in reality, the weekend will involve history from 1914 to present day.
“Oldham and Saddleworth has got significant military and civilian attachments. We would encourage anyone who can throw any light on these important events to come and share their stories and experiences.”
St Chads Church will be open both days of the events and church warden Pam Byrne said: “Church was very important through those times and played a key role in the community.
“We’ll capture some of the solemnity with a reading of names of the dead from our community from the two wars and the blessing of two wreaths.”
The Pennine 1940’s Military Weekend opens from 11am -11.30pm on Saturday 26 and 12noon-4pm on Sunday 27.
Admission for military vehicle parking is on a pre-registered booking basis. Camping is available from the July 25 if required.
