SUPPORT: Runners and walkers raised funds for the North West Police Benevolent Fund and The Firefighters Charity

THE MOTHER of a murdered woman police officer praised a community for supporting a charity event in her daughter’s memory.

Scores of kind-hearted families took part in a charity fundraiser to remember heroic police officer PC Nicola Hughes, 23, from Diggle.

The event marked the second anniversary of the death of PC Hughes and PC Fiona Bone, who died in a grenade and gun attack while investigating a hoax burglary.

It was organised by Chasing Rainbows, the fundraising team set up by the Diggle police officer’s family and friends, and staged at The Hanging Gate.

More than 80 runners took part in the half-marathon from Stalybridge backed by more than 40 walkers who set off from Mossley.

The afternoon event, filled with balloons and colourful stalls, continued with children’s activities, dancing, face painting, a barbecue, hog roast, live music and a charity auction.

Sue Hughes, Nicola’s mother, said: “I can’t thank the community and friends enough for their support.

“It’s been a fabulous day. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and had an absolute ball.

“And it’s been a joy and a real pleasure by giving something back to them all and the community for their support.

“Greater Manchester Police marshalled the race and walk and provided a mobile unit which was a big attraction for the children along with a tender from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

“And special thanks to Saddleworth Round Table for the hog roast.”

The memorial day raised money for the North West Police Benevolent Fund and The Firefighters Charity.
