MP starts the search for new summer school participants

DEBBIE Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, has started the search for young people to take part in her fifth annual ‘Working for Your Community’ Summer School.

She explained: “I am often asked if I can give young people some experience of an MP’s office but unfortunately I can’t accommodate them all.

“To try and give as many young people from Oldham as possible community placements experience I will be running my ‘working for your community’ summer school for 16-24 year olds.

“My aim is to give participants the chance to develop community action skills and experience by working on various projects.

“Participants will also develop key skills for potential future involvement in politics and community based work.”

The selected group of young people will be based in Oldham and must be available for every weekday for the duration of the two-week scheme from July 9 until July 20, 2018.

Participants will spend the first week developing knowledge and understanding of community development work, campaigning skills and tools.

Sessions will be delivered by various experts and leaders in community development, campaigning, communications, and politics.

The second week will be spent working with Oldham-based organisations and charities.

On Tuesday, July 10 there will be a visit to Parliament where the group will have a tour and meet various politicians, researchers and advisors.

Mrs Abrahams added: “What I love about the summer school is seeing how much the young people develop and grow in confidence and knowledge in such a short time.

“If you’re interested in getting some great experience in community-based skills and making new friends, this is the summer school for you!”
