Musicians rally with charity concert in Uppermill for paralysed friend

ENJOY A brass band spectacle in Uppermill as musicians rally together to help a friend paralysed from the neck down in an accident two years ago.

The annual charity fundraising concert by Gilbert Symes and Champion Brass will this year raise funds for John Owen, who is now wheelchair-bound.

‘Friends of John Owen’, who used to play in Rochdale Band and others, are coming together for the special event at the Civic Hall on Saturday, January 9, starting at 7.30pm.

They will be led by Musical Director Derek Broadbent from Brighouse and Rastrick while compere for the evening will be Gilbert Symes.

The event follows one in August organised by Gilbert at the White Lion in Delph which raised £723.50 for John to help with housing and equipment costs.

Tickets for the ‘Friends of John Owen’ Brass Band concert cost £12 (concessions £11). They are available from Post Offices in Delph, Uppermill, Diggle and Greenfield or call Phil Beckwith on 07976 165815 or Gilbert Symes on 07717 332855.
