Talented Lydgate Stitchers unveil second eye-catching wall hanging

VIVID COLOURS of Lydgate’s rolling hills from sunrise to sunset is brightening up the wall of a popular inn’s snug after a dedicated stitching group unveiled their latest masterpiece.

Lydgate Stitchers spent around 12 months delicately creating the eye-catching hanging to adorn the wall at The White Hart.

Each of the 16 members of the group worked on a section of the hanging before they were all appliqued together on the background to create the final piece.

Celia Gledsdale, a textile artist who facilities the group, said: “By working on a section each the members can work to their own skill level.

“Some have been very adventurous and done some great things. Then it all comes together with a nice feeling of community spirit.”

The group used a painting by local artist Jill Harrison as their inspiration for the wall hanging, which has impressed locals.

Love Lydgate chair Jennifer Greenwood commented: “The wall hanging is stunningly beautiful and has brought together a wide range of people with a variety of skills.”

Charles Brierley of the White Hart added: “The wall hanging adds to the history and proud tradition of the community. We are pleased to have it on display.”

It is the second hanging created by the talented group after their ‘Remembered in Thread’ textile was placed in Lydgate Parish Hall in 2013 alongside the memorial plaque.

It features a young man sitting thoughtfully in a local landscape to represent and commemorate the 44 Lydgate soldiers who never returned home from World War One.

Again, a painting by Jill Harrison was translated into fabrics and threads by locals, who then named themselves the Lydgate Stitchers under the direction of Celia.

The impressive hanging was featured on the front cover of national textile magazine ‘Be Creative with Workbox’ in January/February 2013.

And after being named as the editor’s “favourite cover to date”, it was included in the magazine’s gallery of ‘textile masterpieces we just had to share’ for their 150th anniversary in July/August 201
