SADDLEWORTH IS home to a wide range of trees, with the likes of English Oak, Yew and Goat Willow filling up the picturesque valley.
But one tree that has never been native to the villages has appeared on Churchill Playing Fields in Greenfield… and it isn’t sprouting fruit or berries but shoes.
A wide range of Converse, plimsolls and pumps can be seen dangling from the large tree adjacent to the skate park, which has caused hilarity for passers-by – and surely some blisters.
There does not appear to be any correlation between the shoes and dwindling numbers of skaters, although it might be a punishment for football players who get sent off.
From speaking to local residents, it seems there is no explanation to the shoes, with the tree even being referred to as ‘modern art’.
One mother said: “People just keep adding to them, it’s like a feature of the Playing Fields. As long as it doesn’t harm anyone, I don’t see why it should be a problem”.
If you have any explanation for the ‘shoe tree’ or comment on what should happen to it, email aimee@saddind.co.uk or ring Mark on 07876 089468.
