Naylor counts down to season

LIAM Thompson and Ben Davies, both out for several weeks with lower-back problems, could be pushing for recalls as early as this weekend, revealed Oldham RL boss Scott Naylor after last night’s training session.

oldham roughyeds (deleted 8718b7ceef4027a796af27c644ade372)Sammy Gee, also absent through injury at Featherstone, is another who might be available for Sunday’s tough clash with London Broncos at Bower Fold (3pm).

Richard Lepori, who signed last week, is back in training with Roughyeds, but he needs a few sessions to reach the required standard of fitness.

Also back in a fortnight will be the suspended George Tyson, who still has two games to serve before he can push for a recall.

Said Naylor: “I will probably have some difficult selection choices to make this weekend, but I’ll have a whole lot more in a couple of weeks. That’s how it should be.

“Thompson, Davies and Gee will be back in full training on Thursday and if they come through that without adverse reaction, they’ll all be available for the Broncos game.”

The London full-timers were one of only four teams to beat Roughyeds home and away in the regular Championship season in 2016. The others were Leigh, Bradford and Halifax.

Added Naylor: “Broncos have spent a lot of money on good players. They’ve recruited well on Jarrod Sammut from Workington, Keiran Dixon from Hull KR and a couple from Bradford.

“They’ll fancy their chances of qualifying for the Million Pound game and getting back to Super League, but I think we’re a different side from last year and we’ll offer more of a challenge.

“When we played them at home last year it was the first game of the season; it was new to us at this level, and we were nervous. We won’t be nervous this time.”

Only points difference denied the Londoners a place in the Million Pound game last year.

They will have targeted Oldham as a banker win. Said coach Andrew Henderson on the Broncos website: “There were a lot of good things in our 28-22 home defeat by Hull KR, but we now have to focus on beating Oldham and delivering a good performance, which I think we’re capable of doing.”
