A NEW set of clubs worked wonders for Denise Brown who was the runaway winner of Mr Captain’s Prize at Saddleworth Golf Club.
The mother-of-two, who finished 11 shots clear of runner-up Linda Newman in the 36-hole major, attributed her success to her Cobra clubs describing it as the best week of her golfing life.

Denise explained: “I used to have a set of cheap and nasty ones, but I couldn’t believe how the new ones have changed my game.
“They felt right from day one and I had only used them a couple of times before Mr Captain’s Prize when they played a major part in my win.”
The success was even more creditable bearing in mind Denise, who owns a sandwich shop in Stockport, worked both days before taking part in the competition.
“It was a case of working and then dashing to the course where I had a late tee off time,” she continued.
Denise was one shot off top spot after the first round, but thought her chances of victory had disappeared.
“Kay Orme was at the top with me but when I arrived I heard she had birdied both par threes so I went out relaxed thinking I had no chance,” she said.
Denise, who praised the support of playing partners Linda Newman, Brenda Gates and Pam Taylor, says the highlight was a birdie three at the eighth hole in the second round, something she had never achieved before.
It is only three years since Denise, who used to play tennis and squash at Tame Valley, took up golf with a couple other club members.
She became hooked and has already won three majors – last year she captured Lady Captain’s Prize and the Committee Cup. The only major eluding her is Mr President’s Prize.
As a result of her latest success, Denise has seen her handicap slashed by three shots to 22.
She has nett rounds of 69 and 66 for 135 while runner-up Linda Newman’s 146 comprised 75 and 71. Kay Orme also returned 146.
Sue Booth (93-25-68) claimed the first-day prize and second-round honours went to Liz Hinchliffe (85-13-72).
