New stepping stones unveiled by Saddleworth Civic Trust

A DELIGHTFUL pathway of stepping stones has been officially unveiled in Uppermill as part of the Saddleworth Civic Trust’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The stones lie on the bend of the River Tame near the tunnel at Brownhill Visitor Centre to give access between the nature garden and picnic area.

It was the idea Mike Buckley, from the Saddleworth Civic Trust, as they looked to carry out projects in the community to mark their landmark birthday last year.

The stones were put in place with help from Oldham Council, with a team led by Tim Anderson, and paid for by the Civic Trust.

Saddleworth Parish Council chairman Neil Allsopp and the chairman’s lady Carol Allsopp joined Civic Trust members and the public for the opening ceremony, which also included music from Dobcross Brass Monkeys.

Meg Langton, from the Civic Trust, explained: “We had lots of suggestions put forward for things to do for the anniversary.

“Stepping stones were placed across the river in Uppermill park many years ago by the Civic Trust so we thought it would be a good idea to have some further down near Brownhill too.

“It was a lovely day for the ceremony and when the band starting playing, even more people wandered over to see what was going on.”

An engraved stone with a dedication to the Civic Trust has been placed near the stones, and there is a similar one near the stones in the park, which were laid by members in 1964.
