Oldham artist brings wildlife to life in new Gallery Oldham exhibition

Self-taught wildlife artist Anne Bardsley will showcase a colourful new collection celebrating animals, conservation and community.

Oldham wildlife artist Anne Bardsley is inviting visitors to see animals in a new light through her upcoming solo exhibition, Wild Lives, at Gallery Oldham this September.

The free exhibition runs from 5 September to 7 November 2026 and features colourful acrylic, oil and mixed media paintings inspired by animals Anne has observed and photographed during visits to conservation-focused zoos and wildlife parks across the UK.

Rather than simply painting what animals look like, Anne focuses on the personalities behind their faces — the curious expressions, playful moments and quiet behaviours that make each animal unique. Each painting begins with a real encounter, capturing details that encourage visitors to stop, smile and connect with the wildlife around them.

A self-taught artist based in Oldham, Anne has exhibited her work across the UK through solo exhibitions, group shows and public art trails. Her artwork combines bold colour, expressive composition and a touch of humour to celebrate the character of the animals she paints.

Many of the animals featured in Wild Lives are endangered species. Through her artwork, Anne hopes to encourage visitors to appreciate wildlife and learn more about the importance of conservation and protecting the species we share the planet with.

Anne is also an active member of Oldham’s creative community. As Vice Chair of The Friends of Gallery Oldham, she supports local artists and helps organise GO! Artists – Oldham Art Fair. She also volunteers with her partner to run a community board game group at Royton Library, creating a welcoming space for people of all ages to meet and connect.

Following Oldham’s year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture, the exhibition highlights the important role that local artists, cultural spaces and community projects play in making creativity accessible and bringing people together.

Anne said:

“Animals are my greatest inspiration because they all have their own personalities. I love capturing those little moments that make people stop, smile and see an animal in a different way.

“Every painting starts with a real encounter, whether it’s a curious look, a cheeky expression or a moment that makes me laugh. Those are the moments I want to share with people.”

The exhibition opens with a launch event on Saturday 5 September 2026, from 2pm to 4pm at Gallery Oldham. Visitors are invited to meet Anne, explore the exhibition and celebrate wildlife, art and conservation. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
