OLDHAM WILL commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide with an event at Oldham Civic Centre on Friday, July 10.
The event will be opened by the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ateeque Ur-Rehman, with a minute’s silence to remember the 8,372 lives taken in 1995.
The commemorative occasion will see residents share their own powerful stories of when they visited the Bosnia-Herzegovinian town, which witnessed the worst European atrocity since the Second World War.
Last month, Oldham Council’s commitment to building communities and spreading peace saw it become the first local authority in the UK to sign the “Pledge to Peace” European declaration.
This is a promise of intent that will see Oldham put in place projects and actions promoting a culture of peace.
The declaration complements Oldham’s commitment to co-operative values, like fairness, respect and working together.
The event takes place from 3pm to 3.30pm at the Council Chambers, Civic Centre, Oldham, OL1 1NL.Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come basis.
