Review: The Bubbler, at The Swan Inn, Dobcross
THE RANTS scorched the pubs ancient beams. Tough stuff for any audience, particularly when this award-winning play is actually set in a pub bar.
Peter (Neil Bell) the acidic, hyper character in Cathy Crabb’s forensically observed slice of life in the wake of the 2011 Manchester riots, rails against everything and everyone.
He’s a customer you’ll have heard holding raucous court in a bar and one you would studiously ignore.
But not this time. Full on, he holds you in a fascinating grasp packed with cruel taunts and oblivious to his own shortcomings.
However, the barman, Paul (Daniel Street-Brown), despite perceived restraint, offers a perfect foil with comic, measured timing, which binds the actors andaudience throughout this illuminating production.
A triumph for the cast and the writer. Another winner for The Swan with its dedicated repertoire of diverse entertainment.
Pass me another pint please …
