Outdated tourist boards set for revamp

LARGE TOURIST Information boards filled with details about local events, things to do, bus services and car parks greet visitors around Saddleworth’s villages…

But eagle-eyed reader Michael Fox pointed out that the signs, which are at spots including Scouthead, Greenfield and Delph, are not as useful as they seem as they have not been updated for decades.

He explained: “Although the mount to the sign boldly states ‘Tourist Information’, in actuality the data given is the reverse of informative because it is grossly out of date.

“To take just a few examples, most of the bus services listed on the sign disappeared or were recast several years ago, the Alexandra Craft Centre in Uppermill has long since been supplanted by flats, the Beer Walk has been discontinued, and the Brownhill Countryside Centre is now a café.

“The informed guess of a friend is that the signs must have been put up between 1996 and 2000. It is very clear that they have not been updated since.”

He added: “OMBC is doing a disservice to the area – providing ancient information to visitors is hardly a good strategy to promote tourism!”

A spokesperson for Oldham Council said: “We are looking into how these boards will be used in the future.

“We would like to thank the reader for raising this matter with us.”
