AWARD: Harrison, the other nominees and Cllr Enid Firth

One student from each year group at Saddleworth School was nominated by their head of year, with the overall winner and runner-up then decided by Saddleworth Parish Council.

The winner was Harrison Quinn, 15, who helps to look after his 16-year-old sister Jessica, who has a range of complex additional learning needs.

Parish Council Chairman Cllr Enid Firth presented Harrison with the Lord Rhodes trophy, which will be showcased at the school, a smaller trophy to keep and a cheque for £100.

The Year Ten student said: “It’s just a normal thing for me to do so I didn’t expect to win an award – but I’m very pleased.

“I don’t know what I’ll spend the money on yet – I’ll probably put it in a bank account for now.

“I’ll put the trophy right in the middle of the mantelpiece – it’s the first award I have won!”

Proud mum Deborah added: “We’re absolutely delighted. He is a really good teenager and we’re so proud of him.”

Year Seven student Niamh Simpson was named as runner up and received a cheque for £50 along with a trophy.

She was nominated to recognise her anti-bullying work as well as her commitment to music groups, gymnastics, dance, and volunteering at the Saddleworth Village Olympics.

Certificates were also presented to the other nominees from each year group.

Libby Collard and Emily Brierley from Year Eight were nominated jointly for their anti-bullying work including a visit to the Department for Education to question Nick Gibb on anti-bullying policies.

Year Nine pupil Daisy Shepherdson was described as an ‘all-round fantastic student’ who competes for numerous sports teams and is heavily involved in charity work including cake sales and the Shoe Box Appeal.

And Laura Barlow, from Year 11, was nominated for her contribution as a Young Sports leader and team player as well as her ’excellent leadership skills as a prefect’ and anti-bullying ambassador.

Cllr Brian Lord, chair of governors at Saddleworth School, said: “I am very proud of our children and everything they achieve and the fabulous work they do.”

Parish Council Chairman Cllr Firth added: “It was very difficult picking the winner because what all of the children have done is magnificent.

“We picked Harrison as it is only his family who usually sees the hard work he does.”
