Adventure area to boost outside learning at Delph nursery

A NEW fun-filled adventure playground is bringing learning outdoors for children at a popular Delph nursery.

The colourful outside area at Swan Meadow Nursery is complete with slides, a den, sand pits and play areas, and will also be the scene for some lessons.

It is the ideal spot for the private day nursery, which opened in 2003 and is rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, to build on its ethos of putting play at the forefront of learning.

Vin Fraser, director of the nursery, explained: “This is part of an on-going programme to enhance and improve the outside area to offer more for the children.

“I thought, ‘what did I like as a child or what would I like my children to have’ and based it on that.

“We can now offer lessons outside too, which is fantastic. Maths and English will be much more hands on and interesting, using sticks and stones for example.”

Elaine, Vin’s wife and co-director, added: “A lot of children these days don’t have the chance to play outside and have a mini adventure but we can offer that here.”

Ideas for the play area were gathered from the children, parents and staff before a sketch was drawn up and work on the two-month project got underway.

Aimee Gartland, acting manager, said: “The children love the nature trail and wobbly bridge they already have and wanted something similar.”

Now, similar work will also be carried out at sister nursery Swan Meadow Cottage, which opened in 2012 on Slackcote Lane in Delph, to add to their outdoor provision.
