Player boost for Waterhead after slow pre-season

WATERHEAD WARRIORS have lured back four of their former players to Peach Road for the start of their National Conference League, division three campaign which kicks off on Saturday, March 14 at home to Woolston.

Full-back Luke De Feu, centre/back row Jason Andrews, front row Danny Early and loose forward Luke Bentley have all returned after leaving the club.

Indeed, there was a fifth player who came back, but back/front-row forward Rhys Wareing has since decided to return to Saddleworth Rangers.sport waterhead BADGE

Chairman Mick Slicker snr said: “I coached the lads between the ages of 16/18 years and then they drifted away for various reasons.

“They are still only aged 20/21 years and they will provide the nucleus of what we hope will be a very good side.”

Mr Slicker admitted it has been a challenging pre-season, conceding preparations have not been good.

He said: “We will go into the season with only one pre-season game behind us against St Anne’s in the Standard Cup which is far from ideal.

“We were due to play at Leigh East last Saturday but had to call it off. We could have raised a team, but a number of players were struggling to get there on time.

“It was also on a 3G pitch and in hindsight it was probably good we didn’t play as we couldn’t afford to pick up any injuries.”

Mr Slicker added it has been difficult getting the whole squad together at any given time because of work and other commitments.

He says after back-to-back relegations, this season is all about consolidating and laying the foundations for future success.

“The club has had a difficult couple of years and we aren’t going to change things overnight. It will take time, but we believe we are heading in the right direction,” he concluded.
