KEVIN SINFIELD has admitted he may have been lured to rugby union had he been 10 years younger.

The 34-year-old from Grotton was speaking at the start of the new season which, remarkably, is his 19th Super League campaign.

Sinfield is a one-club servant for Leeds Rhinos having made his debut for them aged 16,

But he says he would have considered a move to Australia’s NRL or rugby union had the opportunity arisen earlier.

He said: “Players will start to choose union because of the opportunities and also the differences in the salary caps.

“It’s about increasing the amount of money coming into the sport. Players have to be good so sponsors are keen to invest.

“We need bums on seats, filling our stadiums. We need to make sure the product is as good an any.”

The product Sinfield and his Rhinos side is serving up at the moment cannot be faulted.

They have won their first four Super League games and, along with St Helens, are the only two clubs still with 100-per-cent records.

And Sinfield admits he is still as excited by the sport as he was as a teenager.

He said: “It would have been nice to have earned enough not to work again. Like everyone else out there, I still play the Lottery.

“But, if I won it, I wouldn’t stop playing rugby.”
