PLAYERS ARE invited to pick up a racquet and get playing on the newly refurbished courts at Saddleworth Tennis Club.
The historic club launched a campaign in January to raise £25,000 to resurface their three courts, which had become virtually unplayable, and prevent them closing after 130 years.
Through fundraising events, generous donations and sponsorship from local businesses, along with a loan from Lancashire LTA and a £1,000 grant from Forever Manchester, their target was achieved.
The courts have been resurfaced with tarmac and, when weather permits, the whole surface will be spray painted with acrylic paint.
So, with work virtually completed, the club is now seeking new members of all ages and abilities to make use of the upgraded facilities.
Neil Gaskell, committee member, explained: “All the work has been carried out on the courts with the exception of the painting which couldn’t be completed due to the weather not being right.
“The painting will hopefully be done as soon as the weather conditions are suitable, probably in April 2017, before the start of the 2017 season.
“The courts are still fully playable and temporary line markings are down. An official opening will take place after painting has been completed.”
He added: “New people are welcome to join and play. Winter memberships are available.
“Social tennis takes place every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm. For more details on either of these, call Wasili Schelowok on 07808 429811.
“Coaching sessions will take place every Wednesday during the winter from 5pm-6pm for mini tennis for 6-10 year olds.
“There is also Cardio Tennis, a fun way to keep fit, for women only every Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am-10.30am and for both male and female on Wednesday from 7pm-8pm.”
