CRIME IN Saddleworth is on the decrease despite significant police cuts nationwide reveals Oldham’s police chief.

Chief Superintendent Catherine Hankinson told the Saddleworth Homewatchmeeting last month that there were 172 fewer victims of crime in the area from April to November compared to the same period last year.
The number of burglaries, robbery and vehicle crimes in that spell have all decreased but anti-social behaviour has risen, seeing 126 more victims.
Overall, 93% of Saddleworth residents believe the police in Oldham are doing an excellent or good job.
These figures come despite funding and staff cuts to forces across the country as central government aims to save £174million.
But Chief Supt Hankinson insisted frontline services at the Oldham division, where there are around 298 police officers, 14 inspectors, 50 sergeants and 68 PCSOs, are still delivering.
She said: “Over the last few years there have been reductions in almost all types of crime.
“The cuts have been deep and we have been affected but I’m pleased to say not too greatly.
“There is nothing worse than being a victim of a crime and we are aware of that but we’re pleased the numbers are getting lower.
“Groups like Homewatch make a big difference and we really appreciate what you do and you’re doing a great job.”
But she added: “We have been improving year on year but I am sure there is going to be a time when that will flatten out.
“We’ve had a bit of a spike in vehicle crime across the whole of the Oldham area as we always do at this time or year, so we urge you to be careful.”
