Public urged to be vigilant after attempted distraction burglary at pensioner’s home in Lees

GMP logoPOLICE ARE urging the public to be vigilant after an 87-year-old man was targeted during an attempted distraction burglary in Lees.

At around 11.45am on Tuesday 13 October 2015, the man knocked on the door of the victim’s home on Stamford Road and said he was concerned with the drainage system.

He was allowed inside while the victim went outside to check whether work was being carried out on the street.  When he realised there was not any work, he went back inside and heard the man upstairs.

He walked upstairs and found two men searching his wardrobe with the other downstairs.  He challenged them and all three left empty handed.

Detective Sergeant Jason Byrne said: “I would firstly like to raise awareness of the incident and ask residents, particularly the elderly, not to let strangers into their home unless they are fully satisfied they are there for a genuine reason.

“We only have a description of one of the men. He was white, in his mid 20s to 30s, around 5ft 7in tall and wore a high visibility jacket.

“Anyone who recognises the description of the man or believe they may have been targeted by the same people, please call us.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 9080 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
