A YOUNG mechanic is helping Saddleworth drivers keep on track after deciding to go it alone and open his own garage.

Fully qualified mechanic Richard Shaw, 23, offers servicing and repairs at his new unit which opened last month at Squire Mill, off Micklehurst Road in Mossley.
He decided to take the plunge and build a career working for himself after being laid off and struggling to find work as the current economic climate hampers job prospects.
Richard said: “To be honest it’s something I’ve been considering since being an apprentice.
“The only reason it came to be a reality is because I’m good at working on my own and I like to think I’m good at my job.
“The companies I’ve worked for since leaving school haven’t treated me the best so I thought I may as well work for myself.
“If I fail I’ve only got myself to blame at the end of the day which just makes me more determined.”
And Richard revealed his supportive parents have lent a crucial helping hand to help him get his new business off the ground.
He said: “My parents have helped me financially to get me up and running which I really appreciate because they’ve got the belief in me, which gives me the motivation.
“I always said to myself that I didn’t go in to fail because I will make it work.”
“It’s different being my own boss. I found it quite strange because the places I’ve worked at employed a lot of people so I’ve always had many people to work with.
“But I don’t mind it as I can concentrate on what I’m doing in order to get the job done.”
