A POPULAR railway customer care assistant brought a glow of warmth to grateful passengers at Greenfield this winter – by installing an electric fire in the waiting room.
Richelle Walsh, 46, paid £60 from her own pocket for the free-standing fire in Oldham’s only train station to ensure waiting travellers beat winter chills.
She said shyly: “I bought the fire as a present for my customers. I continue to do my best to serve the people who use Greenfield Station.”
Richelle, who began working at the station in 2008, was recognised for her services to the community last year when she was honoured with a BEM.
And in 2009 she claimed two awards for customer service with her rail company and was nominated for Pride of Oldham award a year later.
Her boss, Natasha Wilding, Head of Stations for Northern Rail said: “Richelle is a shining star with a heart of gold.
“We couldn’t be more proud of her – our customers at Greenfield station are so lucky to have her.”
She added: “We are currently getting quotes from suppliers to have a permanent heater in place at the station.”
