CHRISTMAS traditions and scenes are being brought to life through the eye-catching carvings of a local man.
Rob Knotts, from Austerlands, began his hobby about 40 years ago and since then has carefully crafted a plethora of figures, animals and scenes.
His latest festive creations include a wooden nativity and two brightly coloured Father Christmas figures.
Rob, former chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council, said: “At this time of year our house is like Father Christmas’s workshop with wood chips flying!”
He gave a presentation at last month’s Dovestone WI meeting at The Royal George, Greenfield to talk about Christmas traditions and his wood carvings.
He explored the changing image of Father Christmas over the years, deriving from St Nicholas, Sinterklaas and others, as well as figures and traditions in other countries, including Christmas trees, carol singing and reindeer.
• Rob plans to start a wood carving/whittling workshop in the New Year. Tools and supplies will be provided. Number in workshop will be limited to eight for safety reasons.
