OLDHAM have confirmed that Sammy Gee, the Roughyeds’ vice-captain for the past five seasons, has retired from professional rugby league.
Signed as a hooker, he has also played at full-back, centre, second-row and loose-forward in 107 senior games for Scott Naylor’s men since the then newly-appointed Oldham boss acquired his services ahead of the 2013 season.
Describing 30-year-old Gee’s decision to hang up his boots as a “big loss” to the club, Naylor said he wanted his play-anywhere man to be part of next season’s plans and he was disappointed Sammy was calling it a day.
Added Naylor: “It’s sad that he’s going. I know what it’s like to retire and I thought he was more than capable of doing another two or three seasons.
“We hoped he would stay because he gave us a lot of quality and he was a great lad to have around the club and especially in the dressing room.
“He’ll be a big loss, but he was sure he wanted to finish so we have to respect his decision.
“It doesn’t mean I have to agree with it. As far as I’m concerned it’s very unfortunate to say the least, but it’s time now for player and club to move on.
“Needless to say, Sammy goes with a massive thank-you for everything he has done for the club in the past five years. He leaves with the very best wishes of everyone at the club. As I say, he will be a big loss.”
