GREENFIELD LANDLORDS have been crowned with a prestigious title after taking over a popular pub just 15 months ago.
The Royal George on Manchester Road was named ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at brewery JW Lees’ annual awards event in June to recognise the work of tenants Jason and Nicky Worthington.
The pub was also shortlisted in the ‘Pub of the Year’ and ‘Most Improved Pub of the Year’ categories.
Since taking over the pub in March 2015, Jason and Nicky have carried out a string of major refurbishments, including introducing a new menu and weekend carvery roasts.
They have also opened a luxury beer garden, complete with children’s play area and ‘pet corner’, which is home to a variety of animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs and cockatiels.
The pub is also renowned as the home of Saddleworth’s Off The Rails Comedy Club and has also started to host more events and entertainment, such as fitness classes, Baby Ballet and Bridge Club.
Jason, 46, who worked previously in the Events Management industry and organised boxer Amir Khan’s wedding, said he is proud of what he and his team have achieved in a short space of time.
He said: “I really couldn’t be happier at this award – even to get asked to go to the event was an achievement in itself as only the top 20 pubs out of 105 were invited.
“I’m so proud of all our team from the cleaners to the chefs, the bar and waiting staff, for restoring the George back to a great family, community pub, restaurant and function suite.
“Finally a massive thank you to all our loyal customers who have given us good and bad feedback, helping us steer in the right direction.”
Jason added: “We are an unusual pub as we have aimed everything we do at the local community.
“We want people to experience something and by having things on most nights and providing extra things for people to come and see, hopefully we are starting to achieve that.”
The pub, which employs over 40 local people, has set itself an Eco/Green initiative, leading to 100% of cardboard waste being recycled, and plans to install solar panels.
