Saddleworth Golf Club’s winter leagues in full swing

SADDLEWORTH Golf Club’s three winter leagues – Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday – are in full swing.

And the unseasonal mild weather has meant a largely uninterrupted programme of competitions.

Phil Ramsker leads the Sunday league with 45 points from Mark Orme (44) and Phil Sheerin (38).

The Saturday table is topped by Gary Simpson (25pts) from Dave Chapman and Andrew Li (both 20).

The Tuesday league is headed by Richard Hughes and Les Thompson (both 45) from Carl Davidson (44) and Phil Bennett (43).

In the latest Sunday event, a Canadian greensome, James Fahey and Adam Pritchard triumphed with a score of 57.

Runners-up were Ben Pullen and Giacomo Cavallino with 61.5, third were Andrew Thornton and Phil Jones (62) while fourth place went to Stephen Harrington and Martin Heap (62.5).

In other recent Sunday winter league competitions, an American foursomes was won by Phil Sheerin and Warren Mundy (61) on the card from Nick Marner and Dave Chapman.

Third were Jeff Mills and Allan Milnes (62) on countback from Alan Dorrington and Nathan Mills.

A four-ball betterball medal saw Peter Barnes and Stuart Hunter (60) triumph on the card from Mike Shore and Alan Entwistle.

Third were Jeff Platt and Dave Green (61) on the card from Nick Kerin and Phil Ramsker.

In the opening Sunday event, a four-ball betterball medal, Jack Bradbury and Ashley Dearden (58) triumphed with a nett 58 on the card from Eddie Hall and Stephen Castle.

Vice-captain Steve Asquith and Joe Ridley were third with 59.

The latest Saturday winter league event, a four-ball betterball medal, produced victory for Paul Rowbotham and Phil Laverty with a nett 61.

Runners-up were Stephen and David Pullen (63) on the card from Darren Smith and Nigel Hughes. Fourth were Andy Stott and David Chapman (64).

A further Saturday competition, a four-ball betterball Stableford, was won by Ian Gregory and Alan Dorrington with 49 points.

Runners-up were Ken Barnes and Dean Jagger (48) while third were John Barnes and John Moon (47) on the card from Andrew Stott and David Chapman (47).

Also on Saturday was another four-ball betterball Stableford which was won by Bryn Lawton and Steve Lowe with 49 points.

Ben and Gary Simpson (47) were runners-up on the card from Jim Bradbury and Nigel Hughes, Ian and Dave Charnock.

In the opening Saturday Texas scramble, Alan Squires and professional Andy Earlam hit 12 birdies and six pars with faultless golf and a score of 58.8.

But they only won on the card from gary Simpson and Dave Pullen who posted two eagles in their 58.8.

In the latest Tuesday winter league event, a singles Stableford, the victor was Steve Asquith with 43 points.

Second was Nigel Hughes (42) on the card from Nigel Kippax. Fourth was Ben Pullen (41).

The Christmas Eve Tuesday competition, also a singles Stableford, was won by Bryn Lawton with 44 points.

Runner-up was Darren Smith (43) on the card from Tom Williams and Howard Lees.

• Uppermill’s Martyn Torr scored a hole in one at the seventh hole in the Burgau Tennis Golf Society’s Christmas competition in Portugal, but despite his ace he finished last in the competition.
