‘Saddleworth in shock’ says minister as church prays for Uppermill victim

Uppermill minister, Reverend Gary Ridley, says Saddleworth is in shock following the alleged murder of a man outside his church on Friday night, December 21.

And Rev Ridley confirmed prayers would be said for the victim and his family at Uppermill Methodist Church’s scheduled carol service on Sunday morning. (December 23).

A number of floral tributes have been placed outside the place of worship on High Street for the man who is believed to have been from Rochdale.

The flowers replaced a police tent erected at the crime scene following the late night incident.

“All our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been effected by this terrible incident, especially the family and friends of the man who died,” Rev Ridley told the Independent.

“As we know Uppermill is a very warm and close knit community. There is a real sense of shock across the whole community at what has happened.

“We are all trying to come to terms with what has happened. But primarily our thoughts and prayers are for the family of the man who died.”

The Rev Canon Sharon Jones, The Church of England Team Rector for Saddleworth also paid tribute:

“Following the events of Friday evening when a young man tragically lost his life, the Saddleworth community is invited to come together in Uppermill Square on Sunday evening at 8pm to pay their respects and remember the victim and his family and all those affected by this tragedy.”
