SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL captured three of the four cups which were up for grabs at the Oldham schools’ netball finals which were staged at Hulme Grammar.
There were cup-final victories for year seven, nine and 10 with Hulme preventing a monopoly as they claimed the year eight honours.
Sports teacher Mike Healey, who said the girls played with great energy and commitment to fair play, added: “To take three out of four cups is a stunning achievement for Saddleworth School when you consider that Hulme employ two Oldham netball coaches and a Northern Thunder player to work with their teams.
“Our year 10 team has now won this cup for the last four years making it a clean sweep as there is no year 11 competition due to exams.
“These victories sit well alongside the boys who have taken a clean sweep of five titles in the rugby and four of the five basketball titles.”
The annual staff versus year 11 basketball match saw the staff claim the spoils with a 45-41 victory.
With well over 200 spectators filling the sports hall, the game was played in a fantastic spirit raising £118 for charity – the money will be split between the Manchester Giants Foundation and Sports Relief.
The highlight of the match was a spectacular slam dunk from Rylan Dickinson.
Teacher Mike Healey finished 70th from a field of over 2,000 runners in the Blackpool Half Marathon finishing in a time of just under two hours.
And spurred on by his success, he will attempt his first full marathon at Chester in October.
