DELPH’S ANDY Kremner had to box clever to overcame a durable opponent as he made a winning debut as a professional.
The 21-year-old light-welterweight from Lodge Lane outpointed Birmingham’s Jason Nesbitt who, remarkably, was at the opposite end of the experience spectrum as his was his 188th bout as a professional.
Kremner, a former pupil at St Edwards’ Primary, Lees, had a winning margin of 59-57 against 39-year-old Nesbitt in the six-round contest at Wythenshawe Forum.
It was a tough bow for Kremner, an operational support officer with Greater Manchester Police at Oldham Central, who had to survive one awkward moment after being rocked by a powerful shot in the third round.
Kremner, who at one stage in the round looked in serious trouble, admitted it was a steep learning curve saying: “I wanted to put on a show for the crowd and was caught up in the moment and switched off for a moment in the third round.
“I was expecting an easier fight, but he (Nesbitt) was a tough, tough man who came to fight.”
Kremner, who had a successful amateur career spanning 27 fights, admitted it is far removed being a professional.
He said: “There is a big difference to being an amateur where the gloves are smaller and the crowds are larger.
“My trainer John Murray told me it was a good performance, but I know I can do a lot better.”
Kremner added a further obstacle in his professional debut was having to fight three divisions above his preferred weight due to the matchmakers being unable to find an opponent in his category.
Of the eights bouts in the show at Wythenshawe Forum, Kremner without doubt made the most glitzy entrance in top hat, bow tie and a eye-catching purple gown.
“It is all down to my nickname ‘Krem De La Kremner’ and, because of that, you have to look the part,” he joked.
Kremner added he hopes to be back in the ring for his second professional bout within the next couple of months.
