A light-hearted story of lost passions, unexpected connections and the pull of home is coming to Millgate Arts Centre this autumn.
The Saddleworth Constable, written by Martin Paul Roche, will run from September 26 to October 3, 2026, bringing a distinctly local story to the stage.
The play follows Sandy, an artist who has fallen out of love with her work, and Steve, a retired local policeman who has discovered art after losing his enthusiasm for life.
When Sandy returns to her Saddleworth roots, she is looking for a break from her fast-paced life rather than new relationships. But slowing down brings its own challenges, forcing her to confront the things she has been too busy to notice.
Her path crosses with Steve, a sardonic, eccentric and deeply private man who does not recognise what he has to offer others.
As the pair get to know one another, they begin to rediscover a sense of passion and purpose, in a story about finding the life you need, the love you deserve and the home you never really lost.
The production also promises plenty of local humour, including the familiar question of which county Saddleworth belongs to – and, as the synopsis puts it, “cheese and onion crisps.”
The Saddleworth Constable runs at Millgate Arts Centre from September 26 to October 3.
