Young performers are being invited to take to the stage in Saddleworth as auditions open for a coming-of-age play exploring identity, friendship and family relationships.
Saddleworth Players Youth Theatre will hold auditions for Pronoun by Evan Placey on Monday, September 14, from 7.30pm to 9pm, at Delph Library in Millgate Arts Centre.
The production, directed by Rebecca Wood, forms part of the Players’ 2026–27 season and will be performed on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6, 2027.
Male and female actors aged 15 to 19 are invited to audition, while young people interested in joining the backstage crew are also encouraged to get involved.
Pronoun was written as part of a National Theatre project which commissioned writers to create new plays for young people to perform.
The story follows childhood sweethearts Josh and Isabella, who had planned to spend their gap year and future together. But Isabella, now known as Dean, has transitioned, leaving those around him to navigate their own understanding of his identity.
The play explores the impact on Dean, his friends and family, examining questions of gender, expectations and loyalty through a mixture of conflict, humour and moving moments.
The auditions will take the form of an informal read-through, providing an opportunity for young people to meet the group and get involved in the production.
The play contains strong language and references to sexual themes, and explores gender identity and gender dysphoria.
