THE Saddleworth School year 10 rugby team defied Baltic conditions at Churchill Playing Fields to record an emphatic 42-10 victory over Standish School, from Wigan, in the quarter-finals of the North West Counties Rugby League Cup.
Leading 12-6 at half time, the team raised the level of its performance to score five second-half tries and end the hopes of the spirited visiting side.
Skipper Tom Whitehead was awarded the player-of-the-match accolade for guiding his troops around the field masterfully while Josh Fitzgerald was also in scintillating form, dancing through the defensive line to register a brace of tries full of individual brilliance.
Jack Kenway’s steady boot again added 10 points, including a crucial penalty goal shortly after the interval.
The team is now likely to face Wigan opposition once more in the New Year with the semi–final opponents being St Edmund Arrowsmith School.
