SADDLEWORTH School’s year nine basketball team was crowned Oldham schools’ champions.
They were unbeaten in the round-robin tournament at Sport For All, Hollinwood.
An even spread of baskets were scored by all the Saddleworth squad – eight boys and two girls – seeing them jump to victory.
Saddleworth faced tough opposition from Failsworth, Oasis Academy, Crompton House and Radclyffe.
Playing Crompton House in the first encounter, teacher Gary Melling was forced to call his first and only time out of the game after only 90 seconds as he did not seem best pleased with how the contest was progressing. They eventually won 15-2.
The next game was against Radclyffe. This was again another high scorer with Saddleworth triumphing 14-2.
Next up was Oasis Academy, a team that held a huge height advantage over most of the Saddleworth players. Despite this, Saddleworth composed themselves outstandingly and drove the ball confidently to the basket repeatedly resulting in a comfortable 16-4 victory.
Then came the decider, Saddleworth versus Failsworth, a battle that has gone on for many years in which both schools have won this prestigious competition countless times each.
With Failsworth scoring first some heads on the substitutes’ bench were dropped but Saddleworth kept battling for possession. After three-and-a-half minutes Saddleworth had a one-point lead and the game was hanging in the balance until the last minutes in which Saddleworth stretched their advantage to eight points winning 19-11.
Special mentions to Max Godley for keeping the team morale high throughout the tournament and for exhibiting great team motivational skills. Blake Morgan was in inspired form displaying some much-required strength and power within the squad. Last but not least was the free-flowing shooting heroine Olivia Forster who scored four three pointers throughout the tournament.
