SADDLEWORTH TENNIS Club is seeking generous local businesses to back the campaign to prevent it folding after 130 years.
Over the decades the club has been a valuable community facility for all ages, but now it is in danger of closing down as the tennis courts are virtually unplayable.
A campaign has been launched to ‘Save Saddleworth Tennis Club’ and raise the £28,500 needed to resurface the three courts.
Nigel Gaskell, the club’s treasurer, revealed: “In just two months members have raised over £5,000 and we have a number of applications for a variety of funding in the pipeline.
“Membership fees have risen and fundraising events have been planned. However, even if the applications are successful we will still need at least £8,000 to meet the cost.”
He is urging local businesses to help out, as well as raise the profile of their own firms, by supporting the campaign in a number of ways.
Businesses can offer a donation in return for annual tennis membership at £100 per person or £500 for a 10-person membership.
Or they can sponsor the club in return for a 4ft x 2ft vinyl banner advertising their company on the perimeter fence of the courts at a cost of £150.
Donations of prizes to be raffled or auctioned at fundraising events are also welcome, along with sponsorship for events, for example the cost of a comedian or DJ.
Mr Gaskell added: “With new playing surfaces we would be able to attract new members as well as expanding the junior programme, and welcome more people to play the sport.”
The club, which has teams in Oldham and Manchester leagues, also has a qualified tennis coach to provide instruction to all ages, fitness coaching through Cardio tennis and holds regular holiday coaching camps.
