I FINALLY went skiing for the first time at the grand old age of 48!
We went as a group of four families on Boxing Day for a week in the lovely Pyrenees. It seems we were lucky to have snow as most of the more popular areas in the Alps were generally vey grassy places at the time.
We had two families that were experienced skiers and two complete novices and the resort of Cauterets served all our needs very well.
The nursery slopes and tuition were excellent while the higher pistes were challenging (apparently).
I must admit the actual skiing part of my holiday lasted as long as the first afternoon due to a chronic lack of fitness and fear of death. Even so I spent my time hiking around the slopes encouraging the learners and admiring the scenery which was spectacular.
Skiing apart, the whole experience makes for a really good family holiday as we were together the whole time and always had the day’s ‘moments’ to talk about and share.
Since we were self-catering we also had the joy of using French supermarkets, which I love, and then cooking huge communal meals loaded with calories, which we had earned on the slopes.
Despite this and the lashings of vin rouge I came home having lost half a stone and feeling fitter than I had for ages.
The reason I changed the habit of a lifetime and agreed to this type of holiday was because it was cheap, which you don’t often hear about ski holidays, but we managed to get a family of five booked for less than £1,000 pounds.
Obviously there were expenses while we were there but overall I was happy with the cost and the reason it was OK was we booked it all in May.
I had cause to check the cost of the flights in November and they had TRIPLED in price!
So once again the message of this month’s article is the same as last month – BOOK EARLY!
Cheers, Peter
